Does Technology Isolate or Connect?
☝️ There are those who feel that technology does isolates us. I maintain that, while it's certainly a tool that can be misused, it can still be a tool for connection.
☝️ Embrace and connect with technology
Technology can isolate or connect us depending on how we use it. While it contributes to societal issues, it’s also a powerful tool for meaningful connection. Embracing technology can foster community and help maintain relationships. Technology provides tools; any solution to the problems we see lies in how you and I choose to use those tools.

Very surprising on a channel focused on straightforward tech problems, I mean, there are plenty of topics discussed here which are beyond troubleshooting, but this and the privacy issue are one of the outliars and they were great too. On the subject, recently I've stepped outside of my virtual bubble and it has been healthier than an apple a day. Before watching, my observation: technology definitely shifts people's attention and in many cases to the worse. Sitting indoors on their devices, forgetting the scent of grass, fresh air, hearing birds and insects in the air... more and more dragged into endless scrolling, exposed to fakery on unimaginable scale and obviously many comparing their perfectly fine lives otherwise with the artificial agendas, having self esteem issues. And losing a proper diurnal pattern, leading to a plethora of mental and physiological issues. On the other hand, internet opened door to the world to me, formed my views and helped me to be who I am. That before smartphones came on the scene. I actually travelled to the town to the interet cafe and paid per hour. I am glad I am from the generation when I still had a normal childhood, running outside with friends till the dark, exercising on the grass, splashing water in the river at the end of my street, and at most I had vinyls and later casettes with music and stories. And I read actual books, including encyclopaedias LOL. And learned foreign languages out of interest, not because of the school curriculum. Kids today seem to miss a lot of this.

When backing up PC I'm unsure if Google Drive files and folders on the PC have been backed up as well after what you explain with OneDrive. Something weird is happening in Google Drive. 1. Under Google Drive Settings it indicates that files are on the cloud or in other words online but not mirrored to the PC. 2. Under Google Drive>My Drive I right click and under properties it shows the size of files and folders and all of them are occupying disk space on the PC. 3. All folders and files under My Drive in Windows Explorer show the empty cloud icons 4. Any file I opened under My Drive opens fast without downloading. 5. When right clicking any file or folder under My Drive it gives an option to keep this file or folder offline. 1,3, and 5 above suggest that the files and folders are online without local copies. 2 and 4 above seem to suggest that the files and folders are local while on the cloud too. There are no sync issues or error messages in the Google Drive icon running in the taskbar tray on the PC. The above is quite contradictory, inconsistent and confusing.

I would have liked to see much more detail about how these devices work. For example: the YubiKey types out a different string each time, so how does an online account verify that the new string it's never seen before is correct? Does it have to query a server a YubiKey at authentication time? If so, what does that query look like? Was some secret (like a public key) shared at the time of initial setup? If the YubiKey servers are ever compromised, would that compromise my accounts? Not that 2 factor services like YubiKey or, say.....Okta (ahem) are ever compromised... These are important details.

1:52 I only started hiking in my forties, didn't have the confidence to just go and hike wherever, and didn't know many friends who were experienced hikers. But hiking forums enabled me to connect with hikers everywhere, and I got to hike all different parts of our beautiful country with local forum friends! That is the wrong question, as it is never a black-or-white binary decision. The entire Universe exists as shades of grey, yet people inevitably prefer one-or-the-other explanations. Even starting out by posing the question as one or the other is unproductive at best, seriously erroneous at worst.

The sponsored links are more than just problematic. They can be downright nefarious. For a long while I received complaints from people who had applied for a UK National Insurance Number (NINo). This is a number which most UK citizens receive when they're 16 years old and links earnings to the government's HMRC tax system. Employers will normally request one before you start work so that an employee's earnings are linked and the correct tax on earnings is applied. Applications for these are made through the government's website and there is no charge. Unfortunately sponsored links appeared on Google above the official gov.uk website and these sponsored links were all scams. Constant complaints were received about these agencies charging £60-£100 pounds for a NINo. In most instances all that these companies did was to make the application for people and charge for it. There was normally a small disclaimer somewhere on the scam site that they were providing a third party service making it very difficult for the UK's counter-fraud service to take any criminal action against them. This is a problem which appears to have largely passed now but beware people! Always skip those sponsored links.
